FREE Nicotine Patches

Did you know that Free nicotine patches are available to smokers who want to quit? The resources which are nicotine replacement therapy (NRTs) products are available in many parts of the USA and other international locations. They are mostly funded by governments and non-profit organizations to help those who are quitting smoking quickly started.

Hubby and I used a program like this in Alabama and officially quit smoking 4 months ago - for good! We had been smokers for 25 years. Our state program provided FREE online counseling, as well as FREE patches.

Don't worry if you don't see your state listed.

  • Be aware that almost every state has a toll-free well staffed and well run quitline offering free patches, gum or lozenges.
  • Contact your health department in your state to ask about a quitline.
  • Check your eligibility into the program before completing the necessary personal information online or offline or via the phone.
  • Only approach the quitlines after you have resolved to quit. Your commitment to participate in the program in its entirety without wasting tax dollars will be required.

My Perfect Bug Out Bag

While I know there are lists all over the Internet for BOB's or "emergency bags", I have compiled what I found to be my complete list. It may vary from yours, but I tried to be very thorough and complete. I included items I know my family would use and benefit from. I'd love to hear your ideas or what your perfect bag contains.

For each person in our family, I chose to use the this Extreme Pak with a camouflage pattern. I chose it because it's large, water-resistant and it had decent ratings in a price range I could afford. The packs shipped fast and were much larger than I expected. Not only do they fit my 6' 2" hubby well, they fit my small built teen son. There are all sorts of loops, pockets and clips! While worn, it is comfortable and adjustable in many ways to fit snugly. Bonus - It has room for my huge list below. As time goes on and I can afford it, I may upgrade to better quality. For now, these will do fine in a pinch.

I do list a lot of items that I include in EVERY family member's BOB. I do so just in case anyone in our family is seperated, each person should have the tools they need to survive. I utilize trial sizes or samples of items where I can and package items in categories using recycled tins, small cosmetic bags or large prescription bottles. I also use a Food Saver to seal items.

WEAPONS
(I am not listing specific guns as they are a personal preference)

Gun cleaning kit (if included in your bag)
Stainless Steel knife (full tang - no larger than 10” with 3/16 -4/16 blade w/sheath)
Tomahawk/axe (spend the extra $ for better quality item)
Machete
Multi-tool (don't cheap out here either)
Wetstone
Folding knife
Pepper spray

SEWING KIT
 (basic items)

Scissors (small, also handy for first aid)
Thimble
Spools of thread (or wrap custom length around popcicle stick)
Needles, pins
Heavy duty needles
Patches
Safety Pins
FISHING GEAR
(minimum gear)

15lb test Fishing Line
Assorted hooks
Small pack of weights

FIRST AID
For each person's BOB, I build my own first aid kit versus buying one with useless items and a million various sized band-aids. I use trial sizes and samples as often as possible to utilize space wisely.

Band-Aids, various sizes
Super glue (fast wound closure)
Gauze
Ace bandage
Ibuprofen/ Aspirin
Anti-diarrhea meds (in a SHTF situation...you'll be surprised how your tummy reacts)
Benadryl/antihistamines
Rolaids/tums
Neosporin
Tea tree oil
Coconut Oil
EVVO
Alcohol wipe
Saline solution for contact lens (useful in wound cleansing)
Latex gloves
Aloe Vera Gel
Sunscreen
Thermometer
Q-tips
Iodine
Syringe
Respirators
Bug repellent
Hand sanitizer
Tweezers
Chapstick (I make my own with coconut oil, honey and wax)
Medical tape
Cold medicine
Butterfly bandages
Nail clippers
Moleskin for blisters

FIRE STARTERS
(Make sure to have a minimum of 4 various ways for fire starting)
Lighter
Water-proof matches
Magnesium flint stick
Petroleum Jelly/ cotton Balls
Magnifying Glass

CLOTHES

Socks (not cotton, prefer wool)
Hat/beanie
Long Pants
Shirt (short and long sleeve)
Jacket (rain proof) or poncho
Gloves
Spare eyeglasses
Sunglasses
Underwear
Hiking boots (preferable to have this on already)

HYGIENE
I noticed in some BOB's these items are skipped, I prefer to stay clean & avoid infection as long as possible.

Comb
Toothbrush
Toothpaste (travel size)
Floss
Toilet paper (I roll 1/4-1/3 of a roll into an empty prescription bottle per BOB. Eventually you'll run out, but it's handy to have for a few days)
Soap (travel size)
Lotion (travel size. I use FREE samples )
Deodorant (travel size)
Razor
Feminine supplies (often forgotten, some female prepper are choosing DIY reuseables)
Shampoo (travel size. I use FREE samples)

 SHELTER

Tarp (can be used as shelter)
Sleeping bag (spend the extra $$ for one suitable to your region as well as ultralight)
Thermal Mylar blankets (handy for cooler nights inside your bag)
Waterproof mat

LIGHT SOURCE

Light sticks (I love these over dollar store glow sticks Industrial Grade Chemical Light Sticks)
Solar Powered Flashlight (I choose solar, with battery back-up)
Flare (for emergencies)

COOKING/FOOD

Iodine tablets
Food rations (I prefer DIY dehydrated items)
Water (3 liters per person/per day)

Multi-vitamins
Hand operated can opener - Military, P-51 Model
Packets salt/sugar/condiments (I gather these when eating out and seal in small packages)
Emergency Survival Stove (I'm stuck on this one due to it being ultra-light)

Pocket Calendar
Watch
Ziploc Bags
Folding Saw

SS card
Birth Certificate
Laminated family photo
Laminated emergency contact phone numbers
Laminated list of medication/medical conditions
Laminated next of kin contacts

10 Uses for Empty Prescription Bottles - Prepping

In my family we tend to get piles of empty unrecycable RX bottles. I'm not one to waste, so I've scoured the Internet for various ways to re-use these items. Before reusing ANY empty prescription bottle, take off the labels, so no one has access to your personal information. Make sure to clean and sanitize the bottles thoroughly as well. Storing food in these bottle, MAY NOT BE SAFE. These bottles tend to float in water and be waterproofed, so will be great additions for an emergency kit.

STORAGE
  1. Remove toilet paper from it's original cardboard roll and proceed to roll the sheets tightly. Once your roll is thick enough, fit it into a tall presciption bottle and label for emergencies (I cover my labels with clear tape to protect from water damage). These are handy to have in bug out bags, camping or for emergencies and take up less room. I found I could get 1/4 to 1/3 a roll into one bottle.
  2. Store seeds inside the bottles and then label the bottles according to the seeds they hold. Seeds that need to be kept cold, can easily be placed inside the fridge in these bottles.
  3. Use bottle as storage for tiny items such as rubber bands, paper clips, hair pins, needles, nails, bolts, screws, etc.
  4. Fill a few with various denominations of coins. Place these in your purse, car and bug out bag. No more looking everywhere for change especially if you need to pay the tolls. You may also want to start saving pennies that are pre-1982 due to a high copper content and store using this method.
  5. Place various weights, 10-15lb fishing line and various hooks into a bottle for a simple fishing kit. In a pinch, an extra bottle could be used as a floater for your line.
  6. Toss in pins, safety pins, various sized needles, buttons, a patch and some thread. This can be slipped into your pocket, purse, glove box or backpack as a fast sewing kit. Various color threads can be wrapped around a piece of straw, popcycle stick or nail file.
  7. Prescription bottles tend to be water-proofed. Toss in matches, flint, vaseling coated cotton balls or a lighter to keep your fire starters dry. Super glue a small piece of sandpaper on the inside on the lid for strinking matches.
  8. Q-tips, bandaids, cotton swabs, moleskin, nail clippers & tweezers fit neatly inside an empty plastic prescription bottle for fast first aid.
  9. Store mini pencils, rolled up paper and a pencil sharpener in a bottle for notes.
  10. Gently roll up cords for your electrical devices (nook cord, mp3/4 players USB's, ear buds, lighter plug for your base camp radio). Seal with lid and label.

DIY Restaurant Style Chinese Fried Rice

Like the average person who tries to stretch every last penny, I browse my local supermarkets for affordable cuts of meat to feed my family. OK - I'll say it, I tend to buy meat that has solely been marked down to save a buck. I can honestly tell you we have never had anything bad happen and we save a ton shopping this way. I feel you judging me with your judgey eyes.

I happened upon boneless pork stew meat, reduced of course, so I tossed it in the cart. Call me strange, but I've never used pork stew meat for anything and had no clue how to begin to prepare it in a dish, let alone resemble a suitable meal. Hey, it was on sale - I knew I would find it's purpose later. I did what a lot of you do when the creative juices for a good meal start flowing - I googled inspiration :)

I happened upon a recipe for Chinese Fried Rice and tweaked things from there to suit my taste. My plan was to make this a meal, not a side. It's a 2-step process, but I promise well work the extra effort and totally delish.

I used the recipe below to both marinate and cook the meat at the same time, in the oven.

Marinated Oriental pork

1 pound boneless pork stew meat
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 olive oil
1 teaspoon honey
2 cloves garlic, chopped

Preheat oven to 200 °F. Combine soy sauce, brown sugar, oil, honey & garlic in a shallow baking dish. Add in pork and toss to coat. Cover dish with foil and cook slowly in the oven until tender (about an hour). When done, set aside for Chinese Fried Rice.

Chinese Fried Rice

1 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely chopped red pepper
2 1/2 tablespoons oil
2 eggs, lightly beaten (you can add more)
2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce
1 pound cooked marinated oriental pork, chopped
1/2 cup canned chopped carrot
1/2 cup canned peas
4 cups cold cooked rice, grains separated
6 green onions, chopped
2 cups bean sprouts
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce (adjust to taste)

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan on medium heat (I used a 12" frying pan). Add chopped onions and peppers, sautéing until onions turn a nice brown color, about 8-10 minutes. In a small bowl, mix eggs with 2 teaspoons of soy.  Add 1/2 tbsp oil to pan. Toss in egg mixture, stirring frequently until cooked. Add pork to pan, along with carrots and peas; stir-fry for 2 minutes. Add rice, green onions, and bean sprouts, tossing to mix well; stir-fry for 3 minutes. Fold in 1/4 cup of soy sauce to rice mixture; stir-fry for 1 minute more; serve.

*This will serve 4 adults as a meal or about 8 as a side dish.
